When Bathroom Design Can Change Someone’s Life

We often think of bathrooms as purely functional spaces. But for many people with reduced mobility, the bathroom is one of the places where their independence, safety and dignity are most at stake in everyday life.

A poorly adapted bathroom can increase the risk of falls, create complete dependence on another person for such an intimate activity, or simply lead to discomfort and embarrassment. By contrast, accessible bathroom design can make the difference between needing constant assistance and maintaining greater independence; between experiencing personal hygiene as an uncomfortable task and enjoying it as a moment of care.

Small changes, a big impact

Removing a step, installing a well-positioned grab rail or choosing non-slip flooring may seem like minor details. Yet these changes can allow someone to shower safely, give family members greater peace of mind and help care professionals provide assistance without unnecessary physical strain or pressure.

At Efebé, we have seen first-hand how the right environment can empower people to regain control over their daily lives. This is why we developed our Hygiene Spaces Pack, an approach to rethinking bathrooms through accessibility, comfort and respect for each person’s individual needs and routines.

Showee: when technology becomes part of care

One of the key elements of the Hygiene Spaces Pack is Showee, the smart assisted shower, for which Efebé is an official distributor.

Showee offers personalised shower programmes, adjustable height, manual or automatic operation and even optional voice control, making personal hygiene safer, more comfortable and more dignified.

Its digital platform also allows care teams to manage users, programmes and schedules, while monitoring incidents and resource consumption in real time.

The potential benefits are significant: up to 70% less water consumption, a 50% reduction in the cost per shower and 40% more time for care professionals to dedicate to meaningful, person-centred care.

You can also discover how this technology has been implemented in a real care environment in our article about the Showee smart shower at Anthurium Residence.

Beyond physical accessibility: multisensory care spaces

We also believe that personal hygiene can be a moment of calm and wellbeing, rather than simply another task to complete.

That is why some of our projects go a step further, transforming underused areas into multisensory care environments. By combining Showee with carefully designed lighting, colour and sound, we create spaces that aim to reduce stress and build confidence, particularly for people with specific sensory needs.

Ultimately, it is not just about renovating bathrooms. It is about improving lives.
