Offices Reduced Office Space, Enhanced Wellbeing: Convatec’s Success Story

Sant Just Desvern | 2024

Type of Intervention: Renovation and equipment

Surface Area: 280 m²

Duration: 2.5 months

Convatec, a global leader in medical products and technologies, recently faced the challenge of adapting its office space in Barcelona to meet the demands of modern remote work trends. Their goal was ambitious: reduce the office’s physical footprint by half without compromising functionality or employee well-being. Originally spread across an entire floor, the aim was to redesign just half of the space and turn it into a dynamic, efficient workplace that would continue to meet all operational needs while improving the overall work environment.

We were asked to renovate the fourth floor of an executive office complex in Sant Just Desvern, Barcelona. The goal was to convert an office that previously occupied an entire floor into a new, more compact space for the same company—spanning exactly half the original area while retaining all essential functionalities. This 280m² workspace needed to align with Convatec’s evolving work dynamics, incorporating meeting rooms, shared workspaces, storage areas and co-creation zones, all while preserving the company’s brand essence and maximizing employee well-being.

I WANT A RENOVATION LIKE THIS

To meet this challenge, Efebé developed a strategy focused on optimizing resources and creating a space that would boost both collaboration and comfort.

  • Smart Reuse: By retaining existing elements such as the false ceiling and repurposing the carpet flooring, we were able to minimize demolitions and reduce environmental impact. 65% of the recovered flooring was reused in the renovation of other spaces within the same building.
  • Flexible and Functional Spaces: We created two open work areas, each equipped with sound-absorbing panels to ensure acoustic comfort and guarantee privacy. The large original meeting room was reconfigured into three smaller rooms, using glass partitions to allow natural light to flow through while maintaining transparency and visual connectivity between spaces.
  • Co-creation and Wellbeing Zones: At the office entrance, we designed a co-creation and informal meeting area connected to a reception space featuring integrated greenery. This biophilic design approach promotes a natural connection, helping to reduce stress and enhancing overall well-being.
  • Customized Spaces and Tailor-made Equipment: Each functional area, including the office, sample storage and document storage, was fitted with custom-made furniture designed to match the specific dimensions of the available space. We replaced traditional desk drawers with lockers and designed the office kitchen as a “work café”—providing a cozy and welcoming environment for breaks.
  • Visual Differentiation through Materials and Colors: The chosen color palette—comprising whites, blacks, and wood tones—was carefully balanced with Convatec’s vibrant corporate identity, using vinyl to seamlessly integrate the branding. Additionally, we differentiated the flooring, opting for cement-effect finishes in open areas and wood-effect finishes in meeting rooms and the work café. This created a smooth, visually appealing transition between different spaces.

This successful renovation project not only optimized the original office space but also managed to enhance the overall well-being of Convatec’s employees, setting a new standard for modern, adaptable work environments.
